The morning’s discussion began with the current clean energy and technology landscape in China and its potential for development, as laid out by the Chinese government’s 13th five year plan for the industry. Targeted sectors such as solar and wind power, waste treatment, air quality control, smart grids, and energy storage, are expected to see enormous growth within the plan, presenting an unprecedented opportunity for cooperation between the U.S. and China on clean technology matters. Additionally, UCCTC’s partner and the North American Chief Trade Representative for Zhuhai, Devorah Worch, outlined the rapid development and economic viability of the city of Zhuhai, which illustrates a growing trend of city and province specific cooperation on U.S.-Sino sustainable development projects. After lunch, David Sandalow followed with a presentation on the inception and mission of the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center (CERC) and shared his vision for greater collaborative opportunities between CERC and UCCTC on the subjects of electric vehicles and clean coal.
The meeting concluded with an overview of UCCTC’s goals and strategies for 2015. UCCTC plans to conduct a series of trade missions in the coming year, the first of which will be the Clean Water Trade Mission to China set to take place in June and led by high-level officials from the U.S. government. UCCTC has also started plans to roll out an innovative new B2B database called Global Clean Tek, which will connect stakeholders from across the industry by integrating products, solutions, technologies, investment opportunities, and the clean tech community into one e-platform. While this comprehensive plan of events and new approaches to improve U.S.-China cooperation on clean energy and technology is ambitious, UCCTC’s established on the ground presence in China and strong network of partners makes it uniquely well positioned to bring it to reality.
